Samuel Bayer wants to direct THE BOYS by Garth Ennis

Garth Ennis is a comic writer that has consistently showed his insane level of creativity. He has had very successful runs on such comics as “Hellblazer”, “Judge Dredd”, and “Punisher war journal”. Not to mention that he has been nominated for the Eisner Award (Comparable to the Best Director Oscar) five times, one of which turned into a win. Now it looks like one of his films might be adapted into a film by the director of the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake director Samuel Bayer.

THE BOYS is a comic that was originally put out by DC’s Wildstorm label, but was later acquired by Dynamite and has been running since October 2006. Bayer had this to say about the comic:

“It’s about a group of mercenaries and [their] job is to kick the shit out of superheroes who get out of line. It doesn’t get any better than that. In the world of The Boys, superheroes are scumbags. My youngest brother is a comic book historian and he introduced me to a lot of graphic novels like The Dark Knight. There are some great books I don’t think people have tapped into yet.”

Lately there has been interest in adapting more adult comics to film, such as upcoming KICK-ASS, and 2008’s WANTED. The latter of which was originally a superhero comic, but all traces of superheroes were left out of the film.

I can’t wait to see or hear more about this project and what direction they ultimately take it in. What do you guys think of THE BOYS being adapted to film?

  1. 1) The Boys is published by Dynamite, not Wildstorm. (As you can see in the picture)2) This would have to be NC-17 in order to work, otherwise it would be boring.

  3. Yes dynamite now puts it out, after wildstorm put out the first six issues. I don't think that it has to be NC-17 to be good. There have been plenty of films that have toned down content and been great. BOOGIE NIGHTS is completely full of pornographic content but was toned down just enough for an R rating. I think there is a point in film where amount of violence that is shown in other forms of media is too excessive.
