Blu-ray Review: DR. HORRIBLE'S SING ALONG BLOG

Blu-ray Rating: 5/5

If there was anyway that I could have done “Review! The Musical” for this review, I certainly would have. It would have been a very fitting way to pass on my thoughts about this Blu-ray set that is filled to the brim with the care and love of cast and crew. Sadly, I don’t have the resources to make this happen, so you’ll have to settle for the regular ol’ text version.

I want to be upfront about my love for DR. HORRIBLE’S SING ALONG BLOG, as I became a fan as it was being released online. Subsequently I went on to buy both the film and the soundtrack off of iTunes and tried to introduce as many people as I possibly could to it. Luckily, It was almost unanimously liked by all. Now I can’t wait to show them all the great features that are on the Blu-ray version.

I’m going to go ahead and start with the the big draw of the disc Commentary! The Musical. This is easily one of the most fun and creative features that I have ever seen on a disc. Just from the title alone, you can probably get a pretty good idea about what the feature is all about. They wrote and performed an entire a musical version of the commentary, just because they could. They went all out on this feature and brought back just about everyone who was involved with the making of DR. HORRIBLE. They even gave Groupie #2 and Groupie #3 their own solo’s, both of which are hilarious and somewhat sad.

The musical commentary has its own story that it follows, and creates versions of the cast and crew that are very outrageous and hilarious. They are very quick to poke fun at themselves in all the right places, and create a very fun and enjoyable experience. Don’t worry, if you aren’t sold on all this musical commentary hubbub, they also made a regular commentary that you can sink your teeth into.

On top of the commentaries they also have three Making of Dr. Horrible Featurettes, that give a fantastic additional look into the making of DR. HORRIBLE. They explain how the idea came about, and why they were inspired to make it. They also show what the recording process was like for the songs, and how they worked it into the actual movie. It’s nice to see how passionate everyone was about making this a really fun watch.

A really fun feature they have is ELE Application Videos, where they had a contest to have fans send in video applications to the “Evil League of Evil,” the supervillain organization from the film. They took the best of all the submitted applications and included them on the disc. It’s really cool to see all the creativity that fans took, including a lot of original songs for the villains they created. There is even a villain that was a leg of a chair with a stop motion face, her main goal was to stub the toe of all her foes.

It’s hard to imagine a better set of DR. HORRIBLE, because this one has so much great material already. I couldn’t recommend this Blu-ray any higher for all you fans out there. I guarantee after you watch through it a couple times, you’ll be singing along just as I do… every single time.
