Sequel to THE MUPPETS moves forward without Jason Segel as screenwriter

The Muppets are back in a big way. Our felt covered friends were greeted with immense critical acclaim for their film THE MUPPETS, which went on to gross more than $150 million worldwide. With that kind of dough, I bet Kermit sings “Bein’ Green” with a slightly different connotation now.

Hot off the heels of their big Oscar win for best original song, The Muppets are celebrating by moving forward with a sequel to their big self-titled return to the silver screen without Jason Segel, the co-writer of the original. Tom Wilkinson to join THE LONE RANGER?

Tom Wilkinson is one of cinema’s great character actors who gets major critical acclaim for his performances, and who often shows up in some of the biggest movies of a given year. However, he still doesn’t have that major mainstream prominence that other actors of his caliber have. But that won’t stop him from trying, and all of us who love his work want to thank him for that.

Wilkinson seems to have his eye on joining the cast of Disney’s upcoming LONE RANGER film, and is in early negotiations for his role. Wilkinson would be taking up the role of a railroad tycoon, which is said to be a prominent role in the film. This would pair him up with Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger, and the once odd, yet now exciting, casting of Johnny Depp as his sidekick Tonto. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN director Gore Verbinski will be taking up the director’s chair. Continue reading “Tom Wilkinson to join THE LONE RANGER?”

Michael Chabon on board to write Disney's MAGIC KINGDOM

Michael Chabon

Disney’s MAGIC KINGDOM is quickly coming together, and all the puzzle pieces are seemingly falling into place. We found out not too long ago that Jon Favreau was brought on board as the director, but the writer of the film has been a mystery up until this point.

Several months ago, there was word that Michael Chabon could be brought on as the scribe. That word ended up being a reality, as Disney has officially hired him for the job.

Very little is known about the plot for MAGIC KINGDOM, other than that it will take place at Disney’s flagship theme park. Favreau and Chabon have reportedly spent time at the Anaheim theme park, most likely conceptualizing with the film. This won’t be Chabon’s first time working for Disney either, as he helped out on the Snow White project THE ORDER OF THE SEVEN and the upcoming sci-fi film JOHN CARTER. JOHN CARTER gets a teaser poster

JOHN CARTER is still a ways away from hitting theaters, but excitement and hype began a long time ago. Director Andrew Stanton of Pixar fame is keeping us in the loop as much as possible (thanks!), but anticipation is at an all-time high.

With that being said, they aren’t wasting any time at all on their media campaign. With nine months until its release, Disney has given us a teaser poster to enjoy for now. Continue reading “JOHN CARTER gets a teaser poster”

Tim Burton no longer on MALEFICENT

Live action adaptations of classic animated tales (as specific as that sounds) is becoming somewhat of a common occurrence. Fans have rushed to the theaters to see them, as Tim Burton’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND has proven, when it grossed over a billion dollars in the box office. Regardless of the critical approval, something about these films are filling the seats.

Disney’s next effort, MALEFICENT, once had Tim Burton attached to the project, but it looks like that is a thing of the past. The film is to focus on the titular evil fairy godmother whose casts the first spell on Sleeping Beauty.

Word is that David Yates, who is most well known for his phenomenal work directing the last half of the HARRY POTTER films, is on Disney’s radar is a possible replacement. It’s hard to imagine any other director tackling this film the way Burton can, but someone like Yates certainly has the skill to do it. Maybe Yates’ talent set could even help him surpass what Burton could have done. Continue reading “Tim Burton no longer on MALEFICENT”

Disney in negotiations to make Ice Cube's CHROME AND PAINT

Ice Cube

Ice Cube busted on to the scene in the late eighties with his iconic rap group N.W.A., and subsequently evolved himself into an actor after his unforgettable performance in BOYZ N THE HOOD. After that performance, he hasn’t had a problem finding acting work, but now he looks to be expanding his resume even further.

His upcoming film project, CHROME AND PAINT, is currently in negotiations with Disney, who is looking to make the film in to a PG-13 feature. The film is set to be directed by Ice Cube, who also co-wrote the script and will star in the film. It has been likened to BOYZ N THE HOOD, only set against the subculture of customized cars and their popularity in South Central Los Angeles. The film’s co-writer, Eva Vives, will be doing some re-writes, and the film is expected to shoot at the end of summer.

CHROME AND PAINT would mark Ice Cube’s second directorial outing with a feature film, his first being 1998’s THE PLAYERS CLUB. Continue reading “Disney in negotiations to make Ice Cube's CHROME AND PAINT”

Disney looking to get back into the PETER PAN game

When most people think of PETER PAN, they probably think back to Disney’s 1953 animated classic. Some people might think back to the less memorable 2003 film, but that’s another story. Either way, it seems that Hollywood is looking to remind us again about the boy who wouldn’t grow up.

While there is currently a project in the works with Channing Tatum and Billy Ray that seems to be taking a more reivisionist bent on the fairy tale, Disney is looking for its own new PETER PAN project. The studio is apparently trying to get back into the PETER PAN way of thinking, and are working on their own version of a PETER PAN prequel.

The film would be based off of a children’s book called Peter and the Starcatchers, which was written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson back in 2004. Disney seems pretty interested in making the film, but they want to make sure there is a market for it. Currently, they have a couple of theatre versions of the story being performed in New York and San Diego. The word on the play is that it is very good. Selena Gomez to take on a dark film in 13 REASONS WHY

Being a Disney star can be a pretty tough road to break away from, and in the past many of their biggest stars have found themselves stuck in a typecast series of roles. It seems that Selena Gomez might be joining the ranks of Shia LaBeouf by breaking away from that scene with a role that is much darker than she is accustomed to in 13 REASONS WHY.

The story is an adaptation of a novel by Jay Asher, and follows a high schooler who decides to take her own life, but leaves cassette tapes that explain to thirteen different people how they factored into her death. It’s nice to see that Selena is willing to be a little more daring with her choices in roles, it very well could give some attention from the more mainstream public.
