An American take on AKIRA has been in the works for a very long time now, and in several different incarnations, none of which have yet panned out. It seems that the most recent movement on the project might just be the one that does come to fruition. This is even further propelled by the news that we are getting our first bit of (what seem to be) legitimate casting rumors on the project.
Reportedly, Zac Efron is in talks to take up the lead role in the film, which will be directed by The Hughes Brothers (MENACE II SOCIETY, BOOK OF ELI). The casting of Efron seems to show that the project is trying to be a blockbuster, and have some marquee cache for the American moviegoing public, who may not be very familiar with the source material, but are fans of Efron.
