Michael Chabon on board to write Disney's MAGIC KINGDOM

Michael Chabon

Disney’s MAGIC KINGDOM is quickly coming together, and all the puzzle pieces are seemingly falling into place. We found out not too long ago that Jon Favreau was brought on board as the director, but the writer of the film has been a mystery up until this point.

Several months ago, there was word that Michael Chabon could be brought on as the scribe. That word ended up being a reality, as Disney has officially hired him for the job.

Very little is known about the plot for MAGIC KINGDOM, other than that it will take place at Disney’s flagship theme park. Favreau and Chabon have reportedly spent time at the Anaheim theme park, most likely conceptualizing with the film. This won’t be Chabon’s first time working for Disney either, as he helped out on the Snow White project THE ORDER OF THE SEVEN and the upcoming sci-fi film JOHN CARTER. Kevin Connolly wants to make a Kimbo Slice biopic

Kimbo Slice was once a YouTube star, rising to fame after videos of his brutal street fights were posted to the popular video hosting site. Shortly after his rise to Internet notoriety, he made the transition over into professional MMA, a career that ended more quickly than everyone expected.

Kevin Connolly, most famous for playing Eric Murphy on HBO’s Entourage, is looking to turn Kimbo’s story into a film which he would direct.  He told The Wrap, “I’m trying to get the Kimbo Slice story made. I have his life rights, we have a script that’s great. It’s out and about, and the powers that be are trying to put the money together…Kimbo Slice is known as one of the first YouTube celebrities. He was the first person I ever sat in front of a computer and typed somebody’s name into YouTube. His fights ended up on the Internet, his backyard fights, and he all of the sudden…became this celebrity.” Continue reading “Kevin Connolly wants to make a Kimbo Slice biopic”

THE MUPPETS spoof us once again

THE MUPPETS are coming back in a big bad way, and in promotion of their return, they have been releasing quite a bit of content this summer. First they put out the Teaser Trailer, then they gave us the “Fuzzy Pack,” who we are so glad to have “backy back.” Now they are hitting us with one more spoof trailer to pacify us for a while.

This time we are getting their take on GREEN LANTERN, very naturally starring the greenest Muppet we know, Kermit. This trailer is probably my favorite of the spoof trailers, all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed. This one takes the joke one step further and decides to break the fourth wall – addressing one of the biggest concerns I have had with the film, just when are we getting a full trailer? JOHN CARTER gets a teaser poster

JOHN CARTER is still a ways away from hitting theaters, but excitement and hype began a long time ago. Director Andrew Stanton of Pixar fame is keeping us in the loop as much as possible (thanks!), but anticipation is at an all-time high.

With that being said, they aren’t wasting any time at all on their media campaign. With nine months until its release, Disney has given us a teaser poster to enjoy for now. Continue reading “JOHN CARTER gets a teaser poster”

STAR WARS television series 3-5 years from happening

It’s no secret that the STAR WARS television series that we were once promised many years ago has hit a wall, keeping it from production. A couple of weeks ago, we got word that there was already at least 50 hours of content written, but the big issue was finding a way to make what was written on a television budget.

Now we are getting a little more clarification about the budgetary issues, and some plot information about the show. This quote comes from producer Rick McCallum about the show, which is supposed to be filmed in the Czech Republic:

“The TV series is on hold, but that has nothing to do with the Czech Republic; it has to do with [the episodes being] so ambitious…We have 50 hours of third-draft scripts, but the problem we have is there is a lot of digital animation; we don’t have the technology yet to be able to do them at a price that is safe for television. Since we would be financing them, it would be suicide for us to do this [now]. So we are going to wait three or four years.” Continue reading “STAR WARS television series 3-5 years from happening”

Simon Pegg trying to write new script with Edgar Wright before STAR TREK 2

Oh, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright. They won us over big time when they blasted on to the scene with SHAUN OF THE DEAD. They then proved they could handle the follow-up, and made HOT FUZZ – a film that was different enough than their first, yet still had the same feel we came to expect after SHAUN. And we still have their long-talked about third film in the “Blood and Ice Cream” trilogy titled THE WORLD’S END to look forward to.

Pegg is letting us know they’ve got the ideas down, and is hoping to get some work in with Wright very soon. He said, “we already started the conception process, so it’s just a question of when we can get together. I’m just about to start shooting a movie here in the UK, so maybe between that and STAR TREK [sequel] we might get a chance to bang out a first draft if we’re lucky.” That could be a huge opportunity time for them to make some real progress. If they can finish the first draft, that means that it is much more likely that they will fit in actual production sooner. RISK feature film gets a writer

I think everyone has their stories about the game of Risk. Whether it be that their family and friends played it incessantly, or they played it once for about twenty minutes then switched it out for Mousetrap. My experience was the latter until my teens rolled around and a good friend of mine had a STAR WARS version that was much more interesting to play than the original.

Most people do love Risk though, and they will be happy to know that the feature film version now has a writer on board.

Screenwriter John Hlavin, who most recently wrote UNDERWORLD: NEW DAWN which will be released in January, is now the man to bring RISK to life. The film is being made by Columbia, and is said to be an action thriller. It is also interesting to note that Hasbro currently owns the game. Hasbro are also the owners of Transformers and G.I. Joe, two properties that have very popular film adaptations already. Continue reading “RISK feature film gets a writer”

TUCKER & DALE VS EVIL picked up by Magnolia's Magnet

TUCKER & DALE VS EVIL has been out on the film festival circuit for a while, and many of us were fortunate enough to see it at Sundance 2010 or SXSW 2010. The film was generally well-liked by those who saw it, and it seemed very likely that the film would get picked up by a studio in no time. Then, nothing came from it.

That has officially now changed, and TUCKER & DALE has found distribution. Magnolia’s Magnet branch will finally be putting the film out this summer, by releasing it to Video on Demand for people to rent at home, starting on August 26. A month and change later, on September 30, the film will hit the theatrical market. Seems like a pretty good release plan for a film like this, one that is seemingly becoming more popular these days.
