NBC is bringing everyone’s favorite cannibal, Hannibal Lector, to the small screen. The series is being created by Bryan Fuller, who is well known for creating series like Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me. He is a very creative individual, and many are excited to see how his vision can breathe a breath of fresh air into Hannibal the Cannibal.
Now we are getting some more details about what to expect from the upcoming series. Details after the break.
The show is set to take place in the Red Dragon era of author Thomas Harris’ celebrated mythos, when Hannibal Lector is working closely with special agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) to solve crimes. Fuller has stated that he has seven seasons planned for the show, with five pages of back story from Red Dragon to be the basis for the first couple of seasons. But the Hannibal we know won’t be the one we see here, at least, not at first. Here’s what Fuller had to say about it:
“There is a cheery disposition to our Hannibal. He’s not being telegraphed as a villain. If the audience didn’t know who he was, they wouldn’t see him coming. What we have is Alfred Hitchcock’s principle of suspense — show the audience the bomb under the table and let them sweat when it’s going to go boom. So the audience knows who Hannibal is so we don’t have to overplay his villainy. We get to subvert his legacy and give the audience twists and turns.”
This could be a really great example of dramatic irony that the show will definitely bank on and play off of as much as possible. It seems like a really good angle for the show to take, and a way to constantly drive interest by teasing the hell out of us. It’ll be nice to see a major focus on the relationships, which is really at the core of what the entire series is about. All I know is that I’m very excited to see what comes of this show.
Last order of business is the casting of Hannibal Lector. That my friends, will be the judgement day.
