I know I’m pretty much the only person excited for this film, largely due to my ridiculous and unfounded optimism toward pretty much everything, but I think a futuristic Zorro film could actually be really great. Zorro hasn’t been cool in ages, and although MASK OF ZORRO had a lot to enjoy, it’s sequel LEGEND OF ZORRO didn’t strike the iron quite so hot. But MASK OF ZORRO was almost fourteen years ago at this point. We need something new.
This is where ZORRO REBORN comes in. Gael Garcia Bernal is likely to be the lead, and has a screen test set up to decide if he will be the star. The screen test is set to be directed by Peruvian director Ricardo de Montreuil, which means they are likely looking at him to direct the film.
Note, there is no deal yet for Montreuil to direct, so it is likely that this is a screen test for him too. Depending on how it goes, they’ll probably make him an offer. Montreuil came to notice with a short he directed titled THE RAVEN, which is being adapted to a feature length version. So if ZORRO REBORN doesn’t work out, he’ll likely have some options still. But he could be a very interesting fit for ZORRO.
Of course, I am completely cognizant about how horribly wrong this film could go, but for now I’m going to stick with my blind optimism.
