Sequel to THE MUPPETS moves forward without Jason Segel as screenwriter

The Muppets are back in a big way. Our felt covered friends were greeted with immense critical acclaim for their film THE MUPPETS, which went on to gross more than $150 million worldwide. With that kind of dough, I bet Kermit sings “Bein’ Green” with a slightly different connotation now.

Hot off the heels of their big Oscar win for best original song, The Muppets are celebrating by moving forward with a sequel to their big self-titled return to the silver screen without Jason Segel, the co-writer of the original.

Now, fans of The Muppets shouldn’t fear, it doesn’t seem like it is a lack of interest on Segel’s part. He is just a busy guy, with How I Met Your Mother still chugging along, and his film career blowing up, can you blame him? However, the word from Vulture’s insiders at Disney say that it is likely he will return for the sequel as an actor depending on how the script turns out. The sequel’s script will be handled by Nicholas Stoller, who co-wrote the first film with Segel, and the first film’s director James Bobin.

I still feel like the next film is in very capable hands, and no fear should be held about this news. I think that the Mouse House recognizes the importance and influence of these characters, and they will make damn sure that they are handled well.

If you missed the new film, it hits DVD and Blu-ray on March 20th. You won’t be disappointed.
