Being a Disney star can be a pretty tough road to break away from, and in the past many of their biggest stars have found themselves stuck in a typecast series of roles. It seems that Selena Gomez might be joining the ranks of Shia LaBeouf by breaking away from that scene with a role that is much darker than she is accustomed to in 13 REASONS WHY.
The story is an adaptation of a novel by Jay Asher, and follows a high schooler who decides to take her own life, but leaves cassette tapes that explain to thirteen different people how they factored into her death. It’s nice to see that Selena is willing to be a little more daring with her choices in roles, it very well could give some attention from the more mainstream public.
I’m really excited to see Gomez go in this direction and really push herself to grow as an actress. If she can pull the role off, I have no doubt we will see her pop up more frequently. Whether you’re into Disney Channel or not, you have to admit, they are pretty phenomenal at finding talent. Selena is proof of that.
