THE LAST AIRBENDER is definitely one of the most brought up topics on the GATW Podcast, and is one of the most anticipated summer movies coming out. As a die hard fan of the original series Avatar: The Last Airbender, there are many nuances and small touches that are really important to me. One of these worries has been if they will nail the look and feel of the main creatures in film, Momo and Appa, and now we know for sure if they achieved the very lofty goal.
Just as a fair warning, these haven’t been given a good look in the trailers, so don’t click if you want to save the surprise!
As far as I’m concerned, they made them exactly how I wanted them to be. For any Avatar fans, it seems we really have something to be excited about. Let’s jump into it, shall we?
As I was watching the animated series last night, I began to wonder if Momo was even going to be in the film adaptation since I don’t ever remember seeing him in any of the trailers. This is a case where they decided to stay very faithful to the source material, as he looks spot on. Side note to any die-hard fan’s out there who are worried the film will lose it’s humor and whimsicality, Momo almost entirely exists to be silly and humorous, so this could be a sign that they are keeping the silly side to the show.
Although we got a very brief shot of Appa flying by in one of the most recent trailers, we still had not been treated to a really good look at him. They really went all out with these because Appa looks amazing, and astoundingly similar to the cartoon. In the cartoon he usually appears to be a lot more lazy than he does in this image, but this is just one frame out of hopefully many Appa filled minutes.
The best part about these images, is that since they look so spot on, I can’t help but feel like they will also give them the proper treatment narrative wise. In the show, both Appa and Momo are very important characters and not just the throw away supporting. With all these factors that they seem to have gotten so incredibly right, it’s hard imagining this film being anything but good.
