James Franco has been taking his career in a pretty interesting direction lately, not quite Joaquin Phoenix interesting, but pretty damn interesting. Aside from having a stint on the soap opera General Hospital as what my mom described as “a creepy murderer dude,” and his indie documentary SATURDAY NIGHT (a behind the scenes look at SNL), but he hasn’t had any big roles in a while. Now he is going back to his more Hollywood-friendly self, and has signed on for the title role in a film called RICKY STINICKY.
The film is about two friends who hire an actor (Franco) to pretend he is their friend so they can get away from their wives every now and then. Why they don’t just ask for some alone time is a little weird, but their situation will get us some fun Franco action.
Although the idea isn’t exactly anything special, the promise of Franco as the main character does lift the project up quite a bit. If there was anybody to do this role well, I can certainly see it being Franco. Still, I’m more excited to see Franco as the lead in Danny Boyle’s 127 HOURS.
