I have a feeling that many Gordon and the Whale readers are familiar with Troma’s cult classic, THE TOXIC AVENGER (and its three sequels). For those who don’t know, it is a series of very low budget, gory, ridiculous, and cheesy films, whose main goal is to shock you. The films follow a young nerd named Melvin who was morphed into the mop-wielding Toxic Avenger after jumping into a vat of toxic waste.
It isn’t all that surprising to hear that a remake is in the works, but the surprising part is that it will a PG-13 film comparable to THE MASK.
The film is being produced by Akiva Goldsman, and according to Deadline: “The group intends to turn Toxie into a green superhero for these environmentally conscious times.” Seems like a strange direction for a movie about Toxie, most fans would much rather see him rip someone in half for littering, not give them a nice stern talkin’ to.
This won’t be the first time Toxie has been fitted for the younger crowd, there was a cartoon series that didn’t stick around for too long; and that causes some weariness over the idea. It’s just a little unclear about how enjoyable the series will be when it isn’t glorifying ridiculous murders and gore. I’ll definitely be following this project very closely though, and let you know when more info is divulged.
