Kevin Smith has been talking (and tweeting) about RED STATE for a very long time. The project has gone through development hell because of it’s dark and bleak nature. The pitch was originally turned down by the Weinsteins and at one point there was talk about making a fan funded film. Thanks to some tweets by Smith, we know that a studio is giving him some trust and RED STATE has been green lit.
You can check out his tweets after the jump!
“I talk about lots of stuff I wanna do that either happens years later or never happens at all. Happy to report RED STATE is not the latter.”
He followed that tweet up almost immediately with this one:
“First draft was dated 9/5/07. Looks like we start shooting this July. Took nearly three years, but we’re finally gonna roll on RED.”
Congrats to Smith on his good news. Since the script was actually written by him, most fans will be pretty excited about this project. Especially after COP OUT, his first feature that he did not write himself received mixed reactions.
When asked if the film would be a studio feature or go the more indie route, Smith responded with:
“(*Marches across big lawn, up front porch*) I’m home, Momma.”
Most likely this means the film will be a studio feature, but one could decipher the “Momma,” as indie since that is where he got his start. We should figure out more about this later. Hopefully the film will live up to Kevin Smith’s expectations; his bandwagon is something that many are ready to jump back on. RED STATE will be filmed before he starts filming his beloved HIT SOMEBODY.
