It seems that the “Looney Tunes” are coming back in a big bad way. A couple months ago, I reported that a MARVIN THE MARTIAN movie was being produced. I figured that we wouldn’t hear about any more Looney Tune movies ’til after MARVIN, but now we are hearing about a George Lopez voiced SPEEDY GONZALES film coming out. Lopez and his wife Anna, who are producers on the film, both claim that the film will not be racist, and instead will be more uplifting.
You can check out what Anna had to say about the project, after the jump!
“We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s — the racist Speedy,” Anne Lopez said with a chuckle. “Speedy’s going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at.”
It sounds like they’ve actually come up with a pretty good plot for the film, since SPEEDY usually has less substance than other characters. But it really seems that the Lopez’s have their pulse on the project. The film will be a CG and live action hybrid, just as the MARVIN THE MARTIAN film will be.
I am a huge fan of “Looney Tunes,” and this is a really surprising, but exciting movie idea. If these movies deem successful, I’m sure we’ll get more films based off the famous characters. I really hope they eventually get to a Tazmanian Devil or Gossamer film.

The Speedy Gonzalez of my youth was sooo racist. George Lopez is the perfect person to update this character. Kids love him and he has the respect of the Latino community. My kids love everything he does! He was great as the voice of Papi in Beverly Hills Chihuahua and I'm sure he will be great as Speedy. I'm sure the Looney Tunes purists won't like whatever is done with Speedy… but kids will. Alvin and the Chipmunks made millions because of kids not cynical adults.reputation management
