Joel Silver and Dark Castle to buy SPLICE?

SPLICE took Sundance by storm last month. Being that most of the deals at Sundance are relatively small, you don’t always hear about them. Now it seems that Joel Silver and Dark Castle want to change that, as he is reportedly interested in purchasing SPLICE and giving it some major funding.

Every review of SPLICE that I’ve read says that the film strays away from the average monster movie most were expecting it to be. In fact, many compare it more closely to David Cronenberg’s work. Needless to say, it isn’t what you would expect a major summer movie to be, but apparently that is the plan.

Supposedly, the film will be released to 3,000 screens with an advertising budget of at least $25 million (and that could go as high as $40 million). All this sounds good because I think there would be a public interest in a film like this, but that is a lot of money to put into a little film. Then again, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY was the little film that got some faith, and it performed.

We’ll see what happens with this in the long run, it is a very interesting proposition. I hope they figure it out, because I’d really like to see this movie. I’d like to hear your thoughts on this, would you go check out SPLICE? While you’re at it, check out Rusty’s review of the film here.
