It makes sense that Columbia Pictures would want to make an adaptation of Dan Brown’s “The Lost Symbol” after the astronomical financial successes that THE DA VINCI CODE and ANGELS & DEMONS had. In fact, they got the film rights for the book months before it was even released. Now they are finally stepping up to the plate, as they’ve hired a screenwriter to handle the surefire hit.
Steven Knight, who penned EASTERN PROMISES (easily one of my favorite films of 2007) and DIRTY PRETTY THINGS, will be adapting Robert Langdon’s next film adventure. Currently, Tom Hanks and Ron Howard aren’t signed on to return, but I’m sure they would be very happy to return, especially for the ridiculous paychecks that they will certainly get.
The fact that Knight is writing it makes me feel a lot better about the possible quality of the film. I think the key to the critical success to this film is if they don’t take many liberties as ANGELS & DEMONS did.
