Blu-ray Review: WHITEOUT

Blu-ray Rating: 3/10

If you want to read an actual review of the film, you can read James’ review here. This review will only cover the Blu-ray and its special features.

I don’t know what it is about snow that makes it look so pretty in HD, but it does. Because of this WHITEOUT is gorgeous, and is the perfect setting for a Blu-ray. But unfortunately that is just about the only exciting thing about this disc. Oh, there is a digital copy, that is kind of cool, I guess. There are a couple special features and they aren’t bad at all, I actually somewhat enjoyed them, but there are so few features that it is immensely disappointing.

The first of these features is “The Coldest Thriller Ever” which talks in-depth of what it was like filming in the freezing cold. They discuss finding the place they used to represent Antarctica and the difficulties that presents. It’s a solid watch that is pretty interesting.

The next feature is “Whiteout: From Page to Screen,” which shows the process of transitioning WHITEOUT from its original graphic novel to film. This was actually surprisingly good. They interviewed the writer and artist of the graphic novel, and even had footage of them visiting the sets and checking out their world realized. I haven’t read the graphic novel, but the feature made it seem as though they really captured the essence of the graphic novel in the film version.

The final feature on the disc is just over four minutes of additional scenes. There was nothing groundbreaking there, but if you are a fan of the movie, it is there.

One of the biggest disappointments with this Blu-ray disc is the lack of commentary. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, unless you have a pretty long “Making of” feature, a lack of commentary is unacceptable. That really hurt my feelings towards the set. Even one commentary would have exponentially helped make this set more worthwhile. Additionally, a digital copy is also included in the set that you can download to your computer.

I honestly will have a hard time recommending this Blu-ray to anyone other than fans. It is a little sad too, because the features I talked about were actually really good. They should have run with the idea and made at least a couple more features instead of this bare bones set.

Get it on Blu-ray, DVD, & download January 19th.
