Oscar nomination ballots sent out

Oscars

With the 82nd Academy Awards quickly approaching, it was about time that the Oscar nomination ballots would be sent out. This year, the Oscars will be a little bit different. We previously posted about how the Academy has upped the Best Picture category from five films to ten. Soon, we will find out what ten made the cut, as Oscar voters make their nominations.

“Completed ballots must be returned to PricewaterhouseCoopers by 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010. Ballots received after the deadline will not be counted. Nomination and final Awards ballots are tabulated by PricewaterhouseCoopers to ensure that all aspects of the balloting process are conducted with fairness and accuracy. Prior to mailing, the PricewaterhouseCoopers staff administers a thorough verification process to ensure that there are no duplicate ballots and that none are missing. In addition to being counted and sorted, the ballots are numbered to guarantee that each one is addressed to the appropriate Academy voter.”

I’m really interested to see what films make the Best Picture cut now that the nominee pool has been expanded. I think that it could make a big difference in the choices voters make, as there might be a few more daring and less obvious choices. For example, I feel fairly certain that THE DARK KNIGHT would have been nominated last year if they had accepted ten films.

The nominations will be announced on February 2, 2010. The 82nd Academy Awards will be hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, and will air on March 7, 2010 on ABC.
